SILVIUS LEOPOLD WEISS

12th October 1687 --- 16th October 1750

Born in Grottkau near Breslau, the son of Johann Jacob Weiss, Weiss was a very famous lutenist, and became the court musician
in Breslau in 1708 and served under Prince Alexander Sobieski, and later moved with him to Rome,  in around 1714 he moved to
Dresden,  by this time he had become known as one of the greatest Lutenist of his time, Weiss remain in Dresden until his death
in 1750, after his death his son Johann Adolph Faustinus Weiss succeeded him as a Saxon court lutenist.

Weiss had become during his lifetime one of the most important prolific composers of lute music, and he was known as the most
technically accomplished lutenists of his day.

Weiss became a friend of  Wilhelm Friedemann Bach and it was through  this friend he met the famous J.S. Bach.  Weiss was said
to have competed in improvisation with Bach. Eyewitnesses at the time stated that Weiss,  the legendary lutenist had challenged
J.S. Bach, himself a legendary harpsichordist and organist, in improvisation playing fantasies and fugues.

Weiss wrote over 1000 pieces for lute, of which approximately about 850 pieces survived, as chamber pieces, sonatas, concertos
and suites, which consist mostly of baroque dance pieces.
