DIMITRY (DMITRIYEVICH) SHOSTAKOVICH

12th September 1906 --- 9th August 1975

Dimitry Shostakovich, Russian composer, he was born in St Petersburg 1906, and studied at the Leningrad Conservatory. He was very
precocious and had his first  Symphony performed at the age of 20.  He was greatly esteemed in his  country and  has now found fame
aboard, but more then once has came  into conflict with the then soviet authorities,  especially about his realistic and very  grim opera
A Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk written in 1934,  for not writing the  cheerful and  uncomplicated  music they  deem to be fit  for the great
public.

By compromising judiciously,  however, he has been able to  go on expressing  his distinct  individually to a  greater extent.  His works
include opera the satirical The Nose (Based on Gogol, 1928),  3 ballets, much incidental and film music,  15 symphonies,  chamber and
piano music and songs.

Shostakovich was considered a 'child prodigy' in the 20th century,  who grew up to be an incredibly talented composer,  Shostakovich
spent his time composing music  and performing at prestigious concerts.  The Russian composer was critisised for his unusual take on
classical music,  his style was unique,  combining a tonal and Romantic style to his work.  However, he wrote many  famous scores for
films including Shakespeare's 'King Leah' in 1970.

The career of Shostakovich is an instructive commentary on the life of an artist of the   highest calibre in a society in which everything
was officially controlled. At the age of twenty-one he won first prize in the international Chopin competition.

His first symphony was  one of epic proportions,  won him wide acclaim during the 1920's,  thanks to the Association of Contemporary
Music. Works  from composers  such as Schoenberg,  Berg and  Hindesmith were allowed to  be heard in  Soviet Concert halls,  as with
Shostakovich first symphony which shows little evidence  of his Russian national school clearly affected composers like Berg and even
Hindesmith and even effected the late Romanticism of Mahler.

One thing is for  certain his love for  Russia and his  commitment to Soviet society  remained central to his outlook,  nor did he find the
notion of ideologically directed state art absurd, and often attacked by certain official  critics on various elements  of his compositions
as not following soviet art outlines.  His second symphony was written to  celebrate Russia ten anniversary of the  October Revolution
it was done in a style that could not be question but would later come to be condemned.

Shostakovich introduced model elements  to his harmony and  also made  use of dissonance within his compositions,  but he had never
abandoned basically tonal language for other techniques such as twelve tone or polytonalism composition. He was appointed professor
of the Leningrad Conservatory in 1937 which remained a important part of his and Russian life of that time.

Among his  many works  are his Ten  Sympony 1953,  Eleventh  Symphony  based on the theme  of the 1905  Revolution,  he also wrote
piano works which included his twentyfour Preludes and Fugues (1951) which came under criticism for having dissonantal techniques.
Throughout his life Shostakovich has always produced fine music while being reprimanded for not following soviet music art guidelines
and has navigated a course between his own original ideas and soviet permitted guidelines on music.
