Erkki Gustaf Melartin  was born in Kaikisalmi,  Finland in 1875,  he was a Finnish composer,  conductor,  and teacher of mostly  late-Romantic
and early-modern classical music.  Malartin music was  over shadowed in the 1900's  by Jean Sibelius musical fame,  but in recent years some
have seen that his ability in composition,  and recognised some of his works should be  made more accessible for performances by orchestras.

Erkki Melartin taught theory at the Helsinki Music Institute from (1898, 1901-1907) he succeeded Wegelius as director in 1911, and remained
at this post until 1936.

Melartin was pretty  much Finland's only  composer of symphonies apart from Sibelius.   Some of Melartin works include the  popular wedding
tune, Festive March 1904, which was from the incidental music to the play,  Sleeping Beauty, six symphony's, Lyric Suite No.3 Impressions de
Belgique, (1915-1916), and Sininen helmi, Suite from the ballet, Opus.160 (1930).

Melartin suffered most of his life from chronic health problems and died in 1937 at Pukinmaki. Melartin shares identical birth and death years
with the composer Maurice Ravel.
