JULIUS FUCIK

18th July 1872 --- 25th September 1916

Julius Fucik was born  in 1872 in Prague, Bohemia which was  part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  At a early age he began  to study various
Brass instrument. starting with the Bassoon and later became well known as a composer and conductor of military bands. He composer 100's
of Marches and polkas, and waltzes.

He composed mainly for military bands, even   today his marches are still played in the Czech Republic and his most popular piece Entrance of
the Gladiators which is still play by military bands and Brass bands around the world. He also did other well known pieces like The Florentiner
March" which is still popular throughout Europe.

Fucik also had at the time a quite well known brother  who was opera singer and bass  player Karel Fucik,  in around 1891  he joined the 49th
Austro-Hungarian Regiment as a military musician. It was in 1894 that Fucik left the army to take up a position at the  Theatre in Prague as a
Bassoon player and shortly afterwards became the conductor of the Danica Choir, it was after this that Fucik first began to produce a number
of chamber music pieces, mostly for clarinet and bassoon.

Fucik rejoin the army and in 1910 he became the bandmaster of the 92nd Infantry Regiment in Theresienstadt. At the time, the band was one
of the finest in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Fucík toured with them around the empire giving concerts.

It was in around 1913  that Fucik settled  in Berlin and  started a music  publishing company so that he could market his  compositions but  all
this came to a end with the First World War were he lost most of his fortune and fell on very hard times,  Fucik heath began  to decline and he
died in 1916.
