ENRIQUE GRANADOS

27th July 1867 --- 24th March 1916

Enrique Granados was a Spanish pianist and composer, he was born at Lerida, Spain on July 1867. After studying in Barcelona under Pujol and Felipe Pedrell,
he went to Paris, where he worked chiefty under Charles Wilfrid de Beriot. In 1898 his first opera Maria del Carmen was produced in Madrid.  Two years later
he founded the Sociedad de Conciertos Clasicos and in 1901 the Acedemia Granados.

He had a brillant career as a pianist,  playing chiefly in France and Spain but visiting the U.S.A in 1915 and in 1916,  when his Opera Goyescas was performed
in New York city. On his return home he met his death on the Sussex, which was sunk in the channel by a German submarine on March 24th.

His most characteristic  writing is to be found in his piano music,  which is full of colour and rhythm of  Spnish folk tunes,  Especially in the Goyescas two sets
of pieces from which he took the material from his opera of that name,  he produced melodies of great beauty,  drawing his inspiration from Francisco Goya's
paintings and tapestries and the life of the period in Madrid.

Among his other piano pieces compositions are 12 Spanish dances,   children pieces, 6 pieces based on a spanish popular songs,  also romantic scenes,  poetis
scenes, book of hours and impromptus.   His operas include Picarol, Gaziel,  Liliana, Petrarcaand Follet.   He also wrote a symphonic poem Nit del Mart and did
several orchestral suites, an Oriental for oboe and strings and a collection of canciones amatorias and another of seven Tonadillas for the voice.
