CHARLES-MARIE WIDOR

21st February 1844    ---    12th March 1937

I have done a small Bio below, you will find a lot more detailed information online.

Charles- Marie Widor was born in Lyon in 1844, he came from a family of organ builders,  and it was his father who gave him his first lessons
on music that started him on his road as a organist, composer, and teacher, it was his farther's friend and organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll
who arranged for the  talented young organist to go and  study under Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens  in Brussels in 1863.  Widor at the age of 24
then moved to Paris where he spent the rest of his life. he was appointed at the age of 24, as a assistant to Camille Saint-Saëns.

A year later Widor was appointed to one of the most prominent position for a French organist, as organist of Saint-Sulpice in Paris, Widor was
one of the  longest serving  organist at St-Sulpice for nearly 64 years.   he retired in 1933, and his former student  Marcel Dupre took over the
position in 1934.

Like Litolff who is known mostly for his  the Scherzo from his Concerto Symphonique No. 4 in D minor,   so Widor is still only  known sadly for
his final  movement of his  Symphony for Organ No.5, a toccata. he composered many other fine works, he wrote 10 organ symphony's, Piano
Concerto's and other symphonic works.
