Sir

SIR JULIUS BENEDICT

27th November 1804 --- 5th June 1885

He was born at Stuttgart,  the son of a Jewish banker in 1804,  his early musical talent was noticed and his father sent Benedict to study music and
he later began to study under Hummel and Weber at Desden, Germany, and by the latter's influence received an appointment in Venna in 1823. He
then spent some years in Italy conducting and writing, and finally went, at the suggestion of Malibran, to London in 1835.

He became a naturalized Englaishmanin the late 1830's, and settling in London, he was a familiar figure in English musical life for 50 years. In 1838
he became conductor of the English  opera at Drury Lane during the period of Balfe's great popularity.  In 1852 he became musical conductor under
Mapleson's management at Her Majesy's theatre (and afterwards at Drury Lane), and in the same year the conductor of the Harmonic Union.

His best known opera, one of a large number The lily of Killarney (part of which I have sequence below), written on the subject of Dion Boucicault's
play Colleen Bawn to libretto by Oxenford,  was produced at Covent Garden in 1862.  Benedict conducted every Norwich festival from 1845 to 1878
inclusive, and the Liverpool Philharmonic Society's concerts from 1876 to 1880.

Benedict was knighted in 1871. He died in London on the 5th June 1885.
