JOHN ANSELL

26thMarch 1874 --- 14thDecember 1949

John Ansell was born during the high Victorian era 26th March 1874 and died on the 14 December
1948, but is proberly best known for his light music from the first half of the 20th  century, similar
to the  likes of Albert Ketelbey,  Eric Coates, Albert  Ketelbey and Arthur  Wood – he is now almost
forgotten except for a few of his popular works which are still sometimes proformed today like his
nautical overture “Plymouth Hoe“ made from variousr nautical melodies and Three Irish dances.

He studied composition with the likes of Hamish MacCunn, Reynolds, Ketelbey etc, at the Guildhall
School, he first started his career playing under the great Arthur Sullivan's and later was a musical
director  of various famous London  Threatres, it was in  the late 1920's that he started doing light
music for the BBC along with Eric Coats , Haydn Wood and others.

Ansell's  works include  operettas and orchestral  works,  some of the latter  incidental music, "The
King's  Bride (1911)" &  "Medorah" both operettas, he proformed  with both the seaside orchestras
and on  the BBC. One  of his works  appeared  "Serenade  for cello and orchestras" at the  Proms  in
1898.  He  also  did "The Windjammer"  amoung  other pieces  and overture to  a "Irish Comedy"  a
waltz, "The Toymaster of Nuremberg". Some of these have been kindly sequenced by George Pollen
below.

You will must likely find more information via the internet on this underated composer, no matter
were I looked I could not find a picture of this composer.
