Hungarian composer, pianist and conductor, he was born at Bratislava (Pressburg) in 1877. He studies at the Budapest,   Royal Academy, and was
for a short time a pupil of Eugen d'Albert. He attracted notice by his first pianoforte quintet as early as 1895.

He was appointed professor of the pianoforte at the Berlin Hochschule in 1908, and director of the Academy at Budapest in 1919. Were he became
conductor of the Philharmonic orchestra of Budapest,  and conducted with notable success in the United States.   The style of his compositions has
a conservative and individual feel and carries on the romantic traditions of the 19th century.

Among his principal works may be mentioned Der Schleier der Pierrette a Ballet pantomime,  Tante Simmona a comic opera (1912),   Der Turm des
Woiwoden a opera (1922),  also orcheatral and chamber music and songs,  all of a high order and giving him  a place among the first  composers of
his day. As a pianist he is also of high rank.

Dohnanyi last public performance, on January 30, 1960, was at Florida, very shortly after he died of pneumonia on 9 February 1960.
