CARL OTTO NICOLAI

9th June 1810 --- 11th May 1849

Otto Nicolai born in Konigsberg, Prussia 1810, a German composer, his father who was a composer himself gave his son a education in
music when he realized Nicolai was a child prodigy, later in life Nicolai was to become one of the founders of the Vienna Philharmonic.

While still a youth Nicolai life was turned on its head after his parents divorced, it was in 1826 that he decided to run away from home
he made  his way to  Stargard after he had met  a August Adler, a Offical  in the Goverment  who took him under his wing  and treated
Nicolai like his own son and gave Nicolai some stability to his life. August sent Nicolai to Berlin in 1827 to study under Friedrich Zelter.

Nicolai composed his first symphony in 1831 as well as doing some public concerts, he was invited to become musician to the Prussian
Embassy in Rome. Nicolai wrote all his opera's in Italian, except for the one Opera he is best known for,  which he wrote for in German
The Merry  Wives of Windsor,  the midi I done down  below is a small part of the piece.  He has composed  works for opera's,  orchestra
chorus, ensemble and solo instruments.

It was during the early part of the 1840's that Nicolai become a established figure in the concert life of Vienna. Sadly two months after
his premiere of  the The Merry Wives of Windsor in March 1849,  he collapsed and died from a stroke,  and only two days  after  he had
been appointed as Hofkapellmeister at the Berlin Staatsoper.
