CLEMENT JANEQUIN

1485    ---    1558

You can find more information on this composer by searching the internet.

Clement Janequin was one of the most famous French composer's of the Renaissance, best known for his chansons and he was very influential in
the development of the french version of the chanson's, which was a French song of late medieval and Renaissance music.  The genre had origins
in the monophonic songs of troubadours and trouvère. Clement fame was spread by a new invention,  the printing press which help to spread his
fame throughout France.

Janequin was born near Poitiers in 1485, but there is little in the way of documents that have survive, so only a few details are known of his early
life or interest in muisc and singing.  One thing that was very unusual for this time, is that he never held a regular position with a patron from the
nobility or the church, he only received small amounts of money for the chansons and singing he did, and he found it very hard to survive on what
he received. It was around the mid 1520's that he became a priest.

In around the 1530's Janequib was a singing teacher to the choirboys at the cathedral at Auch,  then he move to Angers,   to teach at the singing
school at Angers Cathedral.   Later in 1554 to 1555,  he was listed as a singer to the King's chapel and later became composer to the French King.
He died in Paris in 1558.
