Waldteufel was born in Strasbourg on the 8th December 1837, he first studied under his father and then went on to study under Joseph Heyberger.
Waldteufel moved to Paris to further advance his  studies at the Conservatoire de Paris, under Marmontel.   He had by the time he reached of age of
27, Waldteufel had obtained the position of court pianist for the Empress Eugenie, later he received the appointment by Napoleon III to become the
musical director of the state balls.

Waldteufel then began in the late 1870's onwards to toured through various European cities including London in 1885, Berlin in 1889, then in 1890's
he did the Paris Opera Balls. He was active in composing Piano and Dance music and conducting for state balls upto 1899 when he retired.

Waldteufel wife died in 1914 and he died the next year in 1915.
