VICTOR EWALD

27thNovember 1860 --- 16thApril 1935

Victor Ewald,  born in Saint Petersburg in 1860.  Ewald career was  as a professor of Civil Engineering in St.Petersburg,  but his
love of music started when he was around 12 years old were he was enrolled for musical training in 1872, at the St Petersburg
Conservatory,  as a cellist,  some years  later he played with the  Beliaeff Quartet which  lasted for over  16 years.  This quartet
became one of the most influential ensemble in St. Petersburg.

Ewald in late 1880's, had been collecting and published Russian folk songs. he was a very successful in civil engineering, and at
this time he  had began to compose and write,  for the brass quintet.  which had recently come in vogue,  he was not the first to
compose for brass quintet, but he was one of the more popular composers.

Ewald’s because  of his musical composing talents,  was invited to join  a very select group of  Russian composers who had very
successful careers in chemistry, Mily Balakirev, navel officer, Rimsky-Korsakov, Imperial Russian Officer, Modest Mussorgsky as
well as one other and Ewald was one  of the more active  and versatile members of this elite group.  Ewald would go on a Friday
Evenings for weekly meeting for amateur performers and composers at the house of Petrovich Belaiev which began in 1888 and
would continue until Belaiev death in 1904.

Ewald during his time composing, would also be teaching civil engineering, Ewald friends from the group of famous composers
had always encouraged Ewald to compose for brass quintets, and other brass pieces. Ewald died in Leningrad in 1935.
