Thomas Dunhill, born 1877 in London, his brother Albert founded the family famous tobacco firm of Dunhill's, Thomas's interest in music
started when he was only a youngster,  after over hearing a  classical piano piece at home,   that sparked his interest in music and it was
shortly after  this that he wanted to be able to play and create music,  his family in the 1890's moved to Kent,  before joining the London
Royal College of Music,  he had composed 2 or 3 works. He joined in 1893 to study piano under Franklin Taylor,   it was not until the year
after that he began to study composition under Charles Villiers Stanford.

In 1897 he won a scholarship for composition.  Thomas took a position at Eton College as Music master which he held for several years,
he later became a professor in 1905 at the Royal College of Music.

During the first world war in served in the Irish Guards and later became a bandman. After the first world war he became director of the
Royal Philharmonic Society.  Dunhill composed a huge array of works and was well known for his light music,  light opera,  various piano
works, chamber music and even a song cycle.  Some of his music was a suite for strings,  titled In Rural England, (1929),  Symphony in A
minor (1916), and a comic opera Tantivy Towers,  a three act light opera,   premiered in 1931,  are just few of the many works of Thomas
Dunhill.
