JAN PIETERSZOON SWEELINCK

April 1562 --- 16thOctober 1621

He was also known as Jan Pieterszoom, he was a Dutch organist and composer,  and was probably born in Amsterdam, although his family came from Deventer.
It has  been persistently  stated that he was  a fellow pupil  with Givanni Gabrieli and also  Leo Hassler of the  great Andrea Gabrieli in Venice,  but this has been
disproved by F.H.J Tiedeman in the Vereeniging voor Nederlandsche Muziek Gegeschiedenis in 1876.

Sweelinck was the son of the organist of the Old Church Amsterdam, and lived in Holland from about 1577 onward. At a date no later than 1581 he was given the
appointed organist to the Old Church, his father having died in 1573, and this post he held until his death in 1621.

A complete list of Jan Pieterszoom Sweelinck works,  edited by Max Seiffert with prefaces,  was brought out by Breitkopf and Hartel  between 1894 to 1901,  see
also Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians
