IGOR STRAVINSKY

17th January 1882 --- 6th April 1971

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), Russian composer, born Oranienbaum, near St Petersburg. In 1903 he became a pupil of Rimsky
Korsakov. His first composition, a Symphony, entirely academic, was performed in 1908.   After the death of his master,  a new
stimulus came from Diaghilev, who had produced Stravinsky's ballet The Firebird in 1910, was his first masterpiece,  still in the
traditions of the Balakirev school.  The second ballet  Petrushka,  1911, however,  revealed a new  personality,  and The Rite of
Spring, 1913, created a riot in Paris and proved of revolutionary significance.

The Wedding, 1923,  and The Soldier's Tale, 1918,  were among the following works  showing how unwilling  Stravinsky was to
stand still and how  intent on always varying his style,  sometimes on the basis  of older models of folksong, Bach,  Tchaikovsky
and so on. After the First World War Stravinsky's work shows a new austerity,  as in the one act opera buffa Mavra,  1921-2,  or
the Piano Concerto,1924.

He turned to absolute music in the classical manner, as in the Octet for wind instruments 1923, the oratorio Oedipus Rex 1927
and the ballet suite  Apollo Musagetes,  1928, written in America.  The Fairy's Kiss 1928,  the Capriccio for piano  and orchestra
1929 and the Symphony of Psalms,1930, filled old forms with new ideas.  A movement towards definite classicism was made in
the Symphony in C. From 1940 Stravinsky settled in the U.S.A. (he became an American citizen in 1945).

Later works  included a Symphony in 3 movements, 1945.  Stravinsky's  experiments had a great  effect upon contemporaries.
Among his more recent works should be mentioned the opera The Rake's Progress, 1951, in which he reverted, in his own way
to bel canto and opera in set numbers; the Cantata, 1952, in which, as in the opera, he showed a new interest in English words
a Septet for strings, wind and piano, 1952; the cantatas Threni, 1958, A Sermon,  a Narrative and Prayer, 1961, Movements for
piano and orchestra, 1960, and The Flood, a musical play for television, 1962.

In his last work he used an individual adaptation of 12 note composition,  just before his death in 1971.  He publish Chronicles
of my Life,  1936,  and  (with R. Craft)  Conversations with  Igor Stravinsky in 1959,  and Memories and  Commentaries,  1960.
