SKRIABIN ALEXANDER NIKOLAIEVICH

December 25th 1871 --- April 14th 1915

Skriabin, Alexander Nikolaievich (1872-1915), Russian pianist and composer; born Moscow, where he studied under Taneiev and Safonov at the Conservatory.

He toured Western Europe as a pianist. Among his works are 3 symphonies, 2 tone-poems (L'Extase and Prometheus), numerous pianoforte sonatas, preludes, etudes, valses, etc. In Prometheus he attempted to synthesise music and colour by means of a 'colour-keyboard', but without success; he developed, too, an individual harmonic basis which had a symbolic musical significance for him, comparable with the mysticism of the theosophists.

The device, demanding special study, failed to attract the general concert-going public. His work has had some influence on Russian music.
