RUGGERO LEONCAVALLO

23rdApril 1857 --- 9thAugust 1919

Ruggero Leoncavallo was a Italian operatic composer, who was born at Naples. He received his musical education at the
conservatoire, and for many years  led a wandering life, he began composering his opera's  but had to support himself in
the mean while by playing at cafe concerts, while he attempted to obtain the production of more then one of his opera's.

His  Pagliacci  was at length performed at Milan  in 1892 with immediate  success,  but neither  his Medici,  (produced at
Milan in 1892) nor Chatterton (1896),  the libretto of which was adapted from De Vigny's tragedy.  obtained any favour.
La Boheme, proformed in 1897 at Venice, it was well received,  though it suffered by comparison  with the more famous
work on the same subject by Puccini.

Zaza was produced in 1900 and later Der Roland in 1904. In all these operas he was his own librettist. None of the more
ambitious works  was very successful.  Leoncavallo is undoubtely seen at  his best in Pagliacci   and in Zaza,  which were
shorter works, in which his gift for the theatre stood him well. He died at Montecatini on August 9th 1919.

Leoncavallo he produced numerous operas and other songs throughout his career, his opera Pagliacci (1892) which has
remained his  best known Opera,  although his attempts to be  known for more then this  his greatest success,  failed in
the end. Leoncavallo has other well-known works such as his Symphonic poem La Nuit De Mai and "Mattinata",   and of
course Zaza.
