Reginald De Koven was born in Middletown, in the USA,  at the age of 11 his family moved to Europe in 1870,  were he received the majority
of his education and later lived in England and graduated from St John's College in 1879. De Coven then travelled to Germany to study piano
at Stuttgart Conservatory,  under Sigmund Lebert  and Dionys Pruckner.  De Koven then moved to Frankfurt to studied composition,  he only
stayed for six months,  then moved on to Florence, Italy,  studying singing  with Vanuccini and   operatic composition  with Richard Genée in
Vienna, then moved to Paris to study with Léo Delibes.

De Koven wanted to put what he  had learn in Europe  to good use and returned to the U.S.A in 1882,  and ended up in New York City.  He did
begin to use his wide musical knowledge as a critic with Chicago's Evening Post. he also started composing many of his songs, which became
vey popular, one of his big successes Oh Promise Me, with words by Clement Scott, still remains a wedding standard.

De Koven produced most of his works between 1887 and 1913, within this period he composed 20 light operas, hundreds of songs, as well as
some orchestral works, a number of sonatas and ballets.  One of his well known composion was  Robin Hood, (which music,  is in midi format
below) premiered in Chicago in 1890. De Koven produced a couple of serious operas but the music press doubted that he would succeed.  His
first opera The Canterbury Pilgrims premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 1917.  He did composed a second opera, Rip Van Winkle, but died
before it was performed in 1920 in Chicago.
