FRANCESCO PAOLA TOSTI

9th April 1846 --- 2nd December 1916

Francesco Paolo Tosti  was born in 9 April 1846 at Ortona started at a young age studing music first at his home
town of Ortona, Italy then slightly later at the conservatory in Naples.  Tosti then went and studied at the Royal
College of San Pietro, learning the violin and composition,  he so impressed his teacher Saverio Mercadante who
then appointed him as a student music teacher, the money was very poor and Tosti develope poor health.

Tosti had to abandon his studies and return back to Ortona during his convalescence in bed which was over some
months he began to composed around several songs.  He submitted some to the Florentine Art Society,  but sadly
they were rejected.

Once Tosti recovered, he ended up in Rome,  he met and  mingle with various  famous people like  the pianist and
composer Giovanni Sgambati,  who was so impressed with him that he  bacame his patron.  It was Sgambati that
persuaded Tosti  to do a concert at the Sala Dante were he met Princess Margherita of Savoy who had been really
impressed by his performance, that she appointed him her singing professor.

It was in the 1880's  that Tosti  travelled to England, were he made  some powerful friends who helped him to be
notice by some members of the Royal family,  who appointed him singing master  to the Royal Family.  He was at
the height of his fame as a composer of songs, one of his songs For Ever and For Ever became a instant overnight
favourite.

Tosti was famous for his light music and sentimental songs he  composed which were performed by the top opera
singers of his time, in time he became a British Citizen,  he was also became a close friend of King Edward VII. In
1913 he decided to returned to Italy and died in Rome in December 1916.
