ANDRE MESSAGER

30th December 1853 --- 24th February 1929

André Messager was born on the December 30, 1853, in France and died on February 24, 1929, I think in Paris, he was a famous french
composer & conductor who was known for his operettas that achieved popularity in France as well as in England. Messager first gained
his reputation in operetta's with his La Béarnaise 1885 and was later premired in London in 1886.

It was after this period going upto the mid 1920's that he produced around 14 operettas, including the likes of Madame Chrysanthème
(1893) based on Puccini's  Madama  Butterfly, Mirette  (1894),  and also composed three ballets out of the three his  Les Deux Pigeons
(1886) was especially well known.  He composered in a light and elegant  style that was  characteristically in the Parisian.  In 1898 he
became  the director  of the  Opéra-Comique,  then he was  invited to become  the artistic director  of the Royal Opera,  Covent Garden
(1901-06). He married Hope Temple who was a His wife was a Irish composer.

Messager from a young age studied the piano and composition, with such famous composers as Camille Saint-Saëns and Gabriel Fauré.
He later  became a major  figure  in the  musical life of  London as well as Paris,  both as  a conductor  and a composer,  were he  held a
prominent conductor positions in Paris and London.  As mentioned above as a composer he is known chiefly  for his light works.  It was
in Paris  that he  conducted  the  world premieres  of Debussys  Pelléas et  Mélisande as  well  as other  famous pieces,  he also  gave at
Covent Garden the British premieres of operas by Saint-Saëns and Massenet.
