MYKOLA LYSENKO

10th March 1842 --- 12th October 1912

Mykola Lysenko was born in 1842 at Hrynky, Kremenchuk county, some think of Lysenko as the father of Ukrainian chamber music.
He was a the son of Vitaliy Romanovych Lysenko.  From a very young  age he became  very interested in  the folksongs of Ukrainian
workers and pheasants. He was a great admirer of the  Ukrainian poet Shevchenko and  when Shevchenko his body was  brought to
Ukraine after his death in 1861 and Lysenko was a pallbearer.

It was during  his time at  Kiev University that Lysenko  collected Ukrainian  folksongs for  which he made  arrangements that were
published in seven volumes. One of his principal  sources was the kobzar Ostap Veresai  (after whom Lysenko  later named his son)
because his composition  was not supported by the Russian  Imperial Music Society he severed his relationship  with them never to
do any pieces in the russian language he only did it in his native language.

His works  which include a works  for piano Ukrainian Suite in Form of  Ancient Dances  and a coupleof rhapsodies, opera's like The
Drowned Maiden and aras Bulba plus studies in Ukrainian folk music and instruments.
