LOUIS VIERNE

8th October 1870 --- 24th May 1937

Louis Vierne was born in Poitiers, France in 1870. This French composer, organist and teacher, was born blind due to congenital
cataracts but gained limited sight after an operation in 1877. It was found out that at the age of 2 that he had a unusual gift for
music, when a simply lullaby was played on the piano, he began to pick out the notes to the musical piece.

In around  1886 Vierne was  taken under the wing of   Cesar Franck  who gave him private  music lessons in harmony as  well as
in composing. He studied at the Paris  Conservatoire first under Franck  who died in  1890 and  then under  Charles-Marie Widor
between 1890-1893. Vierne then became the organist at Notre Dame de Paris between 1900-1937. In later life Vierne eye sight
deteriorated to the point that he had to resort to using Braille to do most of his later work.

Vierne suffered from a massive heart attack or stoke and died in Paris on 24th May 1937 while playing the organ at Notre Dame.

His most famous piece,  Symphony No.1 was composed in 1924. His other works include Six Organ Symphonies, Piano Quintet's,
Piano Mélodies as various other works.

My thanks to Mark Anthony Williams for this Bio on Louis Vierne.
