Theodor Kirchner was born at Neukirchen in Germany on the 10th December 1823, he started his musical life at a very early age, by the time he reached 8 or
9 years old he could already play both the piano and organ. Kircher began serious study at the age of 15,  he studied under Julius Knorr for the piano, and he
also studied the Organ under Karl Ferdinand Becker, at Leipzig.

During his time at Leipzig, Kirchner came to the noticed of Mendelssohn, who recommended that he should apply as a organist in Winterthur, Switzerland, in
1843 were he was accepted,  he remained at Winterthur for about 20 years.  Kirchner in between his works, would travel around Germany,  were he met and
became friends with Brahms and Robert and Clara schmann.

Kirchner in 1862 moved to Zurich to become director of the concerts there, but he only stayed for around 3 years, he then went on to teach at a music school
in Zurich, until 1872. He met wife in Zurich and was married in 1868, but it did not turn out well,  he moved to Meiningen in 1872 to become court pianist, he
was made director of the Conservatory in Wurzburg the next year, and served there until 1875.

Kirchner moved back to Leipzig in 1876 and lived there until 1883, he had by this time accumulated a large debt, his friend's Gade, Brakms etc managed to raise
over 30,000 marks, which at that time was a hugh amount. He had come to such a crisis in his life that in 1890 he left his wife and family and moved to Hamburg
some years  later he suffered  2 strokes and was left paralysed,  Kirchner health would steadly  worsened over the next years,  he became completely blind in his
later life and died in 1903 in Hamburg.
