JOSEPH JOACHIM RAFF

27thMay 1822 --- 25thJune 1882

Joseph Joachim Raff  was  a German composer  and orchestral  conductor,  he was born near Zurich,  Switzerland  on May 1822
and educated chiefly at Schwyz. He was encouraged and assisted by Liszt and von Bulow, his opera, Konig Alfred, was produced
at Weimar under Liszt's direction.

Raff lived  at Weimar until 1856.  In 1859 he  married Doris Genast,  an Actress of  high repute,  and thenceforward  he devoted
himself with  renewed energy to the work of composition,  displaying an inexhautible fertility  on invention with great technical
skill.  He resided chiefly at Wiesbaden until 1877,  Raff was already held in very high Esteem when he was appointed director of
the Hoch-Conservatorium at Frankfort, an office which he retained until his death in June 1882.

Raff's compositions included symphonies, quartets, concertos,  sonatas and songs. here a small list of some of his works, one of
his 12 symphonies,   Symphony No. 7 in B-flat major In the Alps, Opus.201, 1875,  a Piano Concerto in C minor, Opus.185,  1873
and a Orchestral Suite No.1 in C major, Opus.101, 1863, are just a small part of Raff's output.
