FERDINAND HEROLD

28thJanuary 1791 --- 19thJanuary 1833

Ferdinand Herold was born in 1791 France, his father was Joseph Herold, a pianist and composer. At the age of 6 he went to the
Hix Institute and star pupil at his studies, then at the age of seven, he played piano and started to composed some piano pieces.
His father's died in 1802,  which meant he could finally  pursue his dreams of composing.  He was under the instruction  of some
famous composers of their time like Louis Adam (father of Adolphe Adam) as well as Charles Simon Catel etc.

Then in 1810 he won first prize with his own compositions in a piano competition and then in 1812 he won the Prix de Rome.  In
Rome he composed his first symphony,  as well as completing four piano concertos.  It was because of some health reasons that
he moved in 1815 from Rome to Naples, here he composed several pieces including his second symphony, He complsted his first
opera  La gioventu  di Enrico Quinto.  He also taught  Joachim Murat's daughters.  Herold had to  leave Italy and  then went onto
Austria, where he stayed in Vienna for a few months, he then returned to Paris.

It was in 1817  his opera La Clochette premiered  and was better received  then his last opera  Les Rosieres.  He found it hard to
compose operas that were successful. He was so discouraged that he did not produce any operas for more then 3 years. In 1821
he became an assistant at  the Theatre-Italien,  two years  later became chorus-master.  In 1825 he wrote Le Lapin blanc which
failed.  Then in  1826 he composed his opera Marie which turned out to be a great success.

In 1831 he compsed his most famous opera Zampa which premiered in the same year. He wrote other operas like La Medecine
sans medecin in 1832 and Le Pre aux Clercs composed later the same year. Herold died of tuberculosis in 1833.
