Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann was born in Copenhagen,  Denmark. His father was the composer August Wilhelm Hartmann Born 1775 and died in 1850,  but
Hartmann had gained a interest in music composing, but his father did not want to see his son stuggle to earn a living via composing so he sent Hartmann to
study law and become a civil servant, until 1870, but he was mostly self taught in composing,  and he got his first musical engagementas as a organist at the
Garnisons Kirke, Copenhagen, over the next 10 years or so wrote opera's, one of which came to the attention of Robert Schumann who wrote a glowing review.

Hartmann went on a study tour in 1836 around France and Germany were he met many famous composer's of his time, Rossini, Spohr, Marschner and Chopin
plus other well known composer's,  on a later tour around Germany he met Liszt,  Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms etc.   Around 1836 hartmann founded the
Copenhagen Music Society, were he had the post of chairman, which he held until his death in 1900.

Hartmann was by the time of his death, had become a very well loved and respected composer, his impact created a strong influence on later generations such
as Grieg, Nielsen plus many others.
