Ferde Grofe who full name was Ferdinand Rudolph von Grofe which he later shorten,  Grofe was born into a very musical  family stretching back to his
grandfather, Bernard Bierlich, who was cellist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Grofe did not like his time at school to such a extent that he ran
away from home at around 14 years old, living doing odd manual labour jobs and somwtimes playing the piano in bars ext.

By the time he was 17 years old he had received his first commissioned as arranger for Paul Whiteman’s jazz band.  It was through this that led him to
his famous arrangement orchestration of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue for the 1924 premiere. Grofe wrote one of his most famous piece Grand
Canyon< Suite in 1931, he worked on radio, film scores and also wrote a short symphonic piece based on Mark Twain Death Valley Suite in 1948.

Ferde Grofe died in Santa Monica, California, in 1972, aged 80.
