EDVARD HAGERUP GRIEG

15thJanuary 1843 --- 4thSeptember 1907

Edvard Hagerup Grieg (1843-1907), Norwegian composer and pianist, born Bergen, descended from an Aberdonian. Alexander Greig
who left Scotland in 1746, Grieg's musically gifted mother, Gesine (nee Hagerup) was Norwegian.

He went to the Conservatory of Leipzig for his musical education 1858-62. When he returned from Germany he met Rikard Nordraak,
who was  collecting and editing folk-songs  and it is in Greig's  songs that we hear for the first  time the music of the  N.His Op.1 Four
Piano Pieces,  written during his last years in Leipzig,  shows his ideals.  It was in 1861 that Grieg played his first concert as a pianist
in Sweden.

In 1863,  Grieg went to  Copenhagen and stayed   for three years.  It is here that he met the Danish composers J. P. E. Hartmann and
Niels Gade and  Rikard Nordraak the  composer of the  Norwegian national anthem,  he was a good friend of Grieg.  Nordraak  died in
1866 Grieg in his honour composed a funeral march.  In June 1867, Grieg married his first cousin,  Nina Hagerup, a soprano.  A happy
event happened the next year, their only child Alexandra was born but very sadly Alexandra died in 1869 from meningitis. It was the
summer of 1868 that Grieg wrote  his famous Piano Concerto in A minor. It was Edmund Neupert that gave the concerto its premiere
performance in 1869 in Copenhagen.  Unfortunately  Grieg was  unable to be there due  to conducting commitments in Oslo.  In 1868
Franz Liszt wrote a testimonial to  the Norwegian Ministry of Education,  for Grieg even  though he had never met him  which allowed
Grieg to obtain a travel grant. They did meet each other in Rome in 1870.

It was on  Grieg's first visit  they went over Grieg's Violin Sonata No. 1.  On his second visit in April Grieg showed Lizt  his manuscript
of his  Piano Concerto,  which Liszt  sightread the whole  manuscript including the orchestral  arrangement.  Liszt's then  played  and
impressed his audience, Grieg thought that Lizt had played the first movement a little to quickly. It was in 1871 that Grieg founded a
Musical Society Norway and in 1880-1882 conducted the Bergen Harmonic Society.

In his music he rapidly developed a style which was  characterized partly by its echoes of Norwegian folk-song  and even more by his
own harmonic experiments. He was primarily a lyrical composer and was  less successful in large-scale works like his  piano concerto
which owes its popularity more to the charm of its melodies than to a convincing structure.  His other works include  incidental music
for Ibsen's  Peer Gynt,  several  choral works,  a string quartet,  3 Violin  sonatas,  a large  number of  piano pieces and  a even  larger
number of songs.
