Reinhold Moritzevich Gliere was born in the Ukraine on January 1875 (western calendar), son of Ernst Moritz Gliere, who was a maker of wind instruments,
Gliere's father was born  in Germany and he emigrated to Russia,  around the 1860's,  Gliere's father went to work for a instrument maker,  it was here that
his father met his future wife.  Gliere's had a musical upbringing, he was sent to study at the Moscow Conservatory, were some years later after the turmoil
of the Russian Revolution, Gliere became professor of composition.

At the Moscow Conservatory, some of Gliere's famous students who studied under him, Nikolai Miaskovsky, Sergei Prokofiev, Gliere is most well known for
his ballet The Red Poppy,  he also wrote a number of Symphony's,  Gliere stlye of music was intensely Russian  and he included like other composer's of his
time, works of Russian folk music from the eastern parts of the then Soviet Union.

Sadly most Gliere's operas, ballets and orchestral works are virtually unknown to western audience's today, except for a handful of his most popular works,
e.g ballet The Red Poppy and his Third Symphony Ilya of Murom, plus a couple of other works. Gliere died in Moscow on 23 June 1956.
