DIETERICH BUXTEHUDE

1637 --- 9th May 1707

Dieterich Buxtehude  was a oranist  and composer, was born at Helsingborg (now part  of Sweden),  the son of  Johann Buxtehude who died in 1674,  an
organist of the Olai church at Helsingor, Denmark. Dietrich studied under his father, and in 1668 was appointed organist of Marienkirche, Lubeck, where
he instituted the Abendmusiken, a scared concerto held in the church during the advent each year, which J.S.Bach walked 50 miles to attend.

Buxtehude was one of the  most eminent musicians of his day  and greatly influenced the  earlier writings of J.S.Bach.   His organ works were edited in 2
volumes in 1876 to 1878, by Spitla, and some of his cantatas by M.Seiffert in Denkmaler deutscher Tonkunst (1904.)
