WILLIAM BOYCE

11thSeptember 1711 --- 7thFebruary 1779

William  Boyce,  (c. 1710-79),  English organist  and composer. He was a chorister at St Paul's Cathedral, and later an
apprentice to Dr Maurice Greene.

In 1734 he became organist at Oxford Chapel (St Peter's), Vere Street, and in 1736 at St Michael's, Cornhill, becoming
in the same year composer to the Chapel Royal. In 1737 he was appointed conductor of the Three Choirs Festival, and
in 1749  became organist at  All Hallows, Thames Street,  succeeded Greene as master of the king's band in 1755, and
in 1758 became organist to the Chapel Royal.

His works include  much music for  stage entertainments and  a large number of services and anthems,  secular choral
works 8 symphonies  and other instrumental  music but he is best known  for his Edition of Cathedral Music,  1760-78.

Boyce also  edited a collection of  church music by other English  composers and his  own compositions, chiefly sacred
music, were numerous, but he is best known for his song "Heart of Oak".
