MATEO ANTONIO PEREZ DE ALBENIZ

1755   --   23th June 1831

Mateo  Antonio  Perez  de  Albeniz  was born it is thought 1755  in the Basque   region  of  Spain.
Little if  anything isv known of Mateo early life and what influenced him, some think he may have
been a boy chorister  at his local  church which first introduce him to  sacred music. Mateo was  a
excellent  keyboard player  and trained in theory and composition. He obtained posts  as maestro
at some of Spains major churches, such as San Sebastian, then in the late 1790's he was maestro
in  Logrono, he  then spent  around  30 years at  Santa María , it is thought that through ill health
he retired from the post in about 1829. He was a great admirer of the music of Mozart and Haydn
and taught their music stlyes to his students.

He died a couple of years after his retirment in 1831.

Mateo Albéniz  somewhat forgotten  figure today, he was known  throughout much of  Spain in the
late 1700's and early 1800's. He created many works for harpsichord and the newly invented Piano
His  works  include Mass,  numerous  sacred works, Vespers, etc  Albéniz is most known today by  a
single work, his Piano Sonata in D. It has also been transcribed in a form for guitarists. Not much is
known of Mateo Albéniz sacred music etc except maybe his popular Sonata in D .
