ADOLPHE CHARLES ADAM

24th July 1803 --- 3rd May 1856

Adolphe Charles Adam (1803–1856), born in Paris, His father was a pianist and teacher (who was also a composer)
and his mother was the daughter of a physician. Adolphe Adam had always preferred to improvise music on his own
since  his early  childhood and  it was  not until  he was  around  17 that he  was then allowed  to study at  the Paris
Conservatory but not to take it up as a career, before entering the Paris Conservatory he had secretly studied under
his older friend Ferdinand Hérold a famaous composer of his day.

By 1825 after making a name for himself writing  songs for Paris vaudeville houses, becoming a chorus master of the
orchestra the Gymnasie Dramatique, he then helped Boieldieu prepare parts for his opera La dame blanche and made
a piano reduction of the score.

He travelled to England in 1830, he wrote mostly ballet music while in England, he returned to France in 1832, his
work remained popular across the Channel in England, and he premièred his Faust in London in 1833.

Adam is probably best remembered for the ballet Giselle (1841). He had wrote several other ballets and 39 operas,
including Le postillon de Lonjumeau (1836) and Si j'étais roi (1852).

Adam died in 1856 and is buried in Montmartre Cemetery in Paris.
